In March, the ACLU filed suit on behalf of 21 couples who receive health care coverage from public employers. The group is contesting a legal opinion by the state attorney general that bars public employers from offering domestic partner benefits in future contracts. Among the plaintiffs is Peter Hammer, a Pittsfield Township resident who receives benefits from Wayne State University .
